Increase of plasma brain-derived neurotrophic factor levels in two psychotic depressed patients responding to lithium addition to paroxetine treatment

چکیده
We report two patients with psychotic depression who were successfully treated with a lithium addition to ongoing paroxetine treatment. In both cases, plasma brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) levels increased about 2-fold after lithium augmentation to paroxetine, compared with paroxetine treatment alone. Plasma paroxetine levels did not change after lithium addition. These results suggest that the increases in plasma BDNF levels reflect recovery from depressive symptoms in psychotic depression.

Effect of Lithium on Brain-derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) Level in Patients with Ischemic Stroke: A Clinical Trial
Background and Objectives: Previous studies have indicated that lithium may increase the level of the brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), which in turn improves the recovery of patients with stroke. In this controlled trial we evaluated the effect of lithium on BDNF serum level in patients with ischemic stroke. Methods: In this randomized controlled...
متن کاملDifferential effects of diazepam, tandospirone, and paroxetine on plasma brain-derived neurotrophic factor level under mental stress.
OBJECTIVES Serum brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) levels are reduced in depressed patients, and successful antidepressant treatment leads to increases in BDNF levels. However, little is known about how psychotropic drugs affect the mechanism of the human response to mental stress. We investigated the influence of psychotropic drugs on plasma BDNF levels under mental stress using a drivi...

Background and Objective: Alzheimer is a neurodegenerative disease in which a reduced memory capacity and numerous changes occur in the patient’s brain. This study was embarked to shed light on the effects of eight weeks of endurance training and lithium chloride administration on brain-derived neurotrophic factor serum levels in female rats with Alzheimer's disease. Materials and Methods: 7...
متن کاملAcute and chronic effects of lithium on BDNF and GDNF mRNA and protein levels in rat primary neuronal, astroglial and neuroastroglia cultures
Objective(s):Theneuroprotective effect of lithium has been attributed to its therapeutic action. However, the role of glial cells particularly astrocytes, and the possible interactions between neurons and astrocytes in neuroprotective effects of lithium have been disregarded. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the direct effects of lithium on brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) an...
متن کاملP36: Role of Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor in Pathogenesis and Treatment of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a syndrome causing from a severe traumatic happening that leads to threatened death or injury. PTSD is associated with changes in limbic, hippocampal, and prefrontal cortical region function due to changes in synaptogenesis, dendritic modifying, and neurogenesis. Changes in neuron in PTSD patients result from pathophysiological disturbances in inflammato...
